Elevation (2024): Survival Has a New Altitude

In Elevation (2024), director George Nolfi takes audiences into a chilling post-apocalyptic world where survival depends on altitude. Set in the towering Rocky Mountains, the film imagines a future where Earth has been overrun by deadly insectoid creatures known as "Reapers." These monsters can’t survive above 8,000 feet, forcing the remnants of humanity to seek refuge on mountain peaks—far from the cities and the comforts of civilization.

Movie Review - Elevation (2024)

Anthony Mackie stars as Will, a resilient single father trying to protect his son, Hunter, who suffers from a severe lung condition that makes survival at high altitude almost impossible. With dwindling oxygen supplies, Will is forced to descend into the deadly lowlands to retrieve vital equipment. He is joined by Nina (Morena Baccarin), a scientist with a haunted past, and Katie (Maddie Hasson), a tough and impulsive survivor with her own scars.

Visually, Elevation is stunning. The snow-covered wilderness and the vertigo-inducing shots of jagged cliffs and narrow passes bring a cold, beautiful danger to every scene. The film makes excellent use of its environment, turning nature into both sanctuary and threat. Shelly Johnson’s cinematography is crisp and immersive, adding depth to the isolation and desperation that fuel the story.

At its heart, Elevation is about sacrifice, trust, and the terrifying choices people must make when survival hangs by a thread. While the story borrows familiar elements from other post-apocalyptic thrillers, it distinguishes itself through strong performances and tight pacing. Mackie delivers a grounded, emotional portrayal of a man on the edge, while Baccarin and Hasson bring both complexity and courage to their roles.

Though not without its clichés, Elevation is a lean, suspenseful film that keeps its tension high and its stakes higher. It's a reminder that in a world stripped of safety, survival isn’t just about staying alive—it’s about holding on to what makes life worth living.
