Will It Ever Happen – Or Will We Get Something Else Instead?
Since Mindhunter ended its second season back in 2019, fans have been eager for more. But despite its critical acclaim, the series was placed on indefinite hold by Netflix in 2020. The main cast was released from their contracts, and by 2023, David Fincher, the show’s creator, confirmed that the project was essentially over. The reasons were straightforward: the series was expensive to produce, demanding to make, and didn’t attract a large enough audience to justify its costs.
Yet, there may still be hope for those who want the story to continue. Holt McCallany, who played FBI Agent Bill Tench, revealed earlier this year that Fincher has been considering a new approach: reviving Mindhunter not as a traditional third season, but as a series of three feature-length films. Early script work is reportedly underway, but the project will only move forward if Fincher is satisfied with the material and has the time to commit.
Part of the challenge lies in how intensive the show was to produce. Fincher himself described the production of Season 2 as grueling, with long hours and immense attention to detail in recreating the late 1970s FBI world. Netflix ultimately determined that the show’s slower, dialogue-driven format, though beloved by fans, didn’t draw the mass audience required for its high price tag.
Despite this, the fanbase remains passionate, particularly over unresolved storylines such as the BTK killer, which was teased throughout both seasons. Viewers have been vocal about wanting closure, arguing that the show’s unique tone and meticulous storytelling deserve a proper conclusion.
For now, a full third season appears highly unlikely. However, the possibility of a trilogy of films, each potentially exploring major cases and closing out lingering plot threads, offers a glimmer of hope. As McCallany noted, “the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align” for the project to happen.
Until then, Mindhunter remains in limbo—unfinished, but not entirely gone. If Fincher moves forward, the series may finally get the ending its fans have been waiting for.
