Mythica: The Necromancer (2015) – A Darker Turn in a Hero’s Journey
Mythica: The Necromancer (2015), directed by A. Todd Smith, is the third installment in the ambitious Mythica fantasy saga — a low-budget yet high-heart series that follows a young sorceress-in-training as she navigates a world of magic, monsters, and personal trials. Building on the foundation of its predecessors, this chapter dives deeper into themes of inner darkness, loyalty, and sacrifice.
The film centers once again on Marek (played by Melanie Stone), a gifted young magician who was once a slave but now walks the path of a hero. As she grows more powerful, Marek is also haunted by the shadowy legacy of necromancy running through her blood. That tension comes to the forefront when her friend and mentor Thane is kidnapped by a cruel necromancer named Szorlok. To save him, Marek and her band of misfit adventurers must risk everything — and Marek must confront her darkest temptations.
Returning alongside Marek are her loyal companions: Dagen, the charming thief; Teela, a righteous priestess; and Thane, the stoic warrior. Their chemistry and camaraderie continue to be the emotional anchor of the film. As the stakes rise, their bond is tested not just by external threats, but by doubts, mistrust, and Marek’s increasingly unstable powers.
The strength of The Necromancer lies in its character arcs and narrative tension. While the action sequences are limited by budget, they are crafted with care, supported by strong practical effects and a genuine love for the fantasy genre. The world-building expands as well — delving into ancient temples, dark forests, and the grim realms of necromancy.
Melanie Stone delivers a grounded and sympathetic performance as Marek, conveying the inner conflict of a girl trying to use dark magic for good. Her journey feels earned and compelling. Kevin Sorbo (of Hercules fame) also returns in a mentor role, adding a touch of gravitas to the proceedings.
While Mythica: The Necromancer may not boast the visual effects of a big studio franchise, it stands out through heart, character-driven storytelling, and a clear respect for fantasy traditions. For fans of classic tabletop RPGs, Dungeons & Dragons, and epic quests, Mythica continues to be a hidden gem.
It’s a tale of light battling darkness — not just in the world, but within oneself.
